Meeting with David McAllister MEP, Chair of European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee

Wonderful to meet David McAllister MEP, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament and former Minister-President of Lower Saxony.

David is of Scottish extraction so naturally I’ve been interested in this prominent Scot-German politician for some time. In recent years I’ve also enjoyed listening to his contributions on foreign affairs before online. This was my first time meeting him in person, where I was kindly invited to attend the European External Action Service trainees meeting with David. I’m grateful to Phillipe Lefevre for organising and inviting me.

I enjoyed discussing the European Parliament’s paradiplomacy and its ability to undertake more political diplomacy, for example in relation to Taiwan, Brexit, and other affairs.

David was also surprised and pleased to hear a Scottish voice in the room, and it was great to share a moment talking about Scotland, the UK, and Brexit.

It was a very engaging, insightful, and interesting meeting, and another highlight of my Traineeship as I near its end.
